H2S Removal – All You Need to Know about The Procedures

We all know that Hydrogen sulfide or H2S is colourless, highly toxic, water-soluble, flammable and corrosive as well. For this, H2S is heavier than air. H2S has the foul odour or smell just like the rotten eggs. The separation of H2S from the gas stream is very much popular in the economic and environmental field. The removing of H2S is very much necessary. It follows so many methods such as catalytic conversion, biological treatment, precipitation, incineration, chemical scrubbing and chemical oxidation.

Biological treatment is cost-effective and beneficial but this method needs high capital investment than other types of dry-based methods.

Separate H2S through the electrochemical membrane

It is an advanced method to separate H2S from natural gas. In this process, H2S is removed from the natural gas by reduction to the H2 at the cathode and sulfide ion as well. The sulfide ion travels to the anode through the help of molten salt electrolyte in a ceramic matrix. In this process, no absorbents are used here. So, this is one of the economically attractive and overall cheap procedure. It does not need so much equipment than other conventional technologies.

Water treatment methods for removing H2S

  1. Sand filter and chlorination: You can install and use the chlorine feeder and sand filter for removing H2S. Hydrogen sulfide is dissolved by the use of chlorine and the formed or created insoluble sulphide particles can be removed by the use of a sand filter. You need to add 2mg/L chlorine in order to remove or dismiss 1mg/L H2S. You also need to install a small cartridge filter that contains the activated carbon and install it into the drinking tap in order to remove the bad taste of chlorine. This is a top-most alternative in order to remove H2S from water.
  2. Activated carbon filter and chlorination:For this method, you need to install the chlorine feeder and activated carbon filter as well. The H2S is dissolved by the use of chlorine and insoluble sulphide particles. These are removed by the help of an activated carbon filter. But the sand filter has the maximum flow rate of the service. This system is effective where there is only the presence of hydrogen sulphide and no traces of iron.

Aeration: This procedure is practised by spraying water into the well-ventilated tank. Through the spray, the H2S gas will be separate from the water and come out through the ventilation system. Aeration can remove the H2S but the chlorination procedure is still necessary and important.

Before choosing a method, you need to check both initial and operating cost. You also need to check the additional supplies and filters. You need to arrange additional water as well for emergency purposes. You can also go for the biological process. This method is cost-effective than other methods. For these removing processes, the trial is necessary and important to run the whole method safely. You have already known the procedures of hydrogen sulfide removal. So, as per your requirement, you can use any of these methods.
